Why Your Mix Sounds Quiet Compared to Commercial Tracks (It’s Not the Limiter)

You finish a mix. It sounds decent in isolation. Then you A/B it against a commercial track in the same genre, and yours sounds small. Quiet. Thin. So you reach for a limiter, push the input, and chase their level.

It gets louder. It also gets worse – flatter, more fatiguing, less exciting. You’ve made the meter happy and the music sad.

Start from the correct premise: loudness you can’t get back from a limiter was never a limiter problem. Perceived loudness is built into the mix long before the master. The limiter only reveals whether you built it in. This is the diagnosis post that the rest of this section branches off – get this framework right and half the other symptoms explain themselves.

The thing nobody tells you: the limiter is irrelevant on streaming

Here’s the part that reframes the whole problem. Every major streaming platform normalises loudness on playback. Spotify, YouTube, Tidal and Amazon all pull tracks toward roughly -14 LUFS; Apple Music sits around -16. Upload a master slammed to -8 LUFS and the platform simply turns it down to match everyone else. All that dynamic range you crushed – gone, for no payoff.

So the loudness war you think you’re losing was called off years ago. Two tracks arrive at the listener at the same volume regardless of how hard you limited. The one that sounds better is the one that stayed punchy and dynamic, because it has transients and depth the crushed one threw away.

Which means the real question was never “how do I get louder.” It’s “why does my mix feel weak at the same playback level as theirs.” That’s a mix problem, and it lives in four places.

Where perceived loudness actually comes from

1. Arrangement and density

A mix feels loud when its frequency spectrum is full and balanced – energy spread sensibly from sub to air, nothing gaping, nothing piled up. Commercial tracks often feel loud because the arrangement fills the spectrum: the parts were chosen and placed so the whole range is occupied without clutter.

If your mix has a hole in the low mids and a pile-up at 300 Hz, no limiter fixes that. You’re asking a level tool to solve a balance problem. Get it right at the source – the arrangement and the balance – and the sense of size arrives before you’ve touched a limiter.

2. Dynamic control across the mix, not at the end

Commercial loudness is the sum of dozens of small dynamics decisions made on individual tracks and busses – controlled bass, consistent vocals, drums that hit without spiking. By the time the signal reaches the limiter, the dynamic range is already managed. The limiter catches peaks; it doesn’t create density.

Amateur mixes arrive at the limiter wildly dynamic – a vocal jumping 12 dB, a bass with no consistency – and ask the limiter to do all the controlling at once. It can’t, so it pumps and squashes. The density has to be built upstream, track by track.

3. Midrange

Human hearing is most sensitive in the midrange. Two mixes at identical measured loudness will feel different in volume depending on midrange content – the one with present, well-managed mids feels louder. Mixes that feel quiet are very often scooped: big lows, crisp highs, hollow middle. It sounds impressive solo’d and disappears in comparison.

Drums and vocals are primal instruments, and they live largely in the midrange. Get them sitting right and the mix gains an authority that reads as loudness without a single extra dB.

4. Saturation and harmonics

Harmonic saturation adds content the ear reads as loudness and richness without adding much peak level. It’s how analog records felt big at modest meter readings. Gentle saturation on the right sources creates the perception of loudness that limiting can only fake. This is density you generate, not density you squash into existence.

The honest test

Next time yours sounds quiet next to a commercial track, do this before touching any limiter: match levels precisely – turn the commercial track down to yours, or yours up to theirs, by ear or by meter. Loudness-matched, the gap usually isn’t loudness at all. It’s balance, density, midrange, depth. Name the actual difference. Then fix that, not the level. Louder always sounds better, and that’s exactly the trap.

At the end of the day

Your mix sounds quiet because perceived loudness is built throughout the mix, not bolted on at the end – and on normalised streaming, the bolt-on does nothing anyway. Build it in: full balanced arrangement, dynamics handled track by track, present midrange, tasteful saturation. Do that and you won’t need to win a loudness war that no longer exists.
